A Goose Was Murdered Today

A Goose Was Murdered Today
Originally uploaded by Finiky.

It was a beautiful day today, with the exception of the needless death of a goose. I had walked over to Starbucks to get a coffee and on the walk back noticed two cars in the turn lane of two lane roadway.

The pond was silent. I came upon two women who had moved a badly injured goose from the road. Someone had hit it. I don't mean grazed it, I mean obliterated it's head, jaw and neck region. I suspect they were going above the speed limit and didn't want to stop to let the goose walk across the road. The geese often do to get to grass.

Kudo's to the women who stopped to move it from flopping in the road as it was trying to die. They laid it near the walking path close to the pond. Now, a bloodied dead goose was lying there.

One of the women called to have an amimal control type entity pick up the animal. While it wasn't an emergency, there were many people out and about and small children. Something scary for them I'm sure. After a while, I tried calling to see when the pick-up might happen. I was told it would be Monday because it was after 2:30PM. The call went in before then.... FYI.

I told the person on the phone, you're kidding right? It's not even 4PM. They informed me they were not kidding. I then said.. what a bunch of bullshit and this is really not acceptable. Glad to know MY tax dollars are working well, NOT. (the type A in me resurfaced)

Then a police car came along. I flagged him down. I told the officer, I know you have other priorities but... I explained the situation. He radioed and said VDOT would pick it up tonight or in the AM. He then moved the poor goose to a different area. I thanked the Officer. I also asked about how to go about getting speed limites enforced, not noly for the animals but for humans too.

So, one of my new projects.... better traffic enforcement of that area.

I was sad to think that someone could hit the goose and not even stop. If the goose flew into the car or truck then what a terrible accident. But I've seen cars stop for geese and inch closer while they blow their horns. Had the person stopped I would have felt much better about the human race. The two women who moved it and the Police Officer who stopped to help deserve much credit and praise.
