Pops Osprey @ work

Pops Osprey @ work
Originally uploaded by Finiky.

March 18, 2009- Male adult Osprey aka Pops is busy adding sticks to the platform building the nest. No sign of Female aka Ma. Male also knocked off some of the sticks while making adjustments. He retreived some that fell. Not all sticks made it to the nest, a few he dropped before he was over the platform. Three photographers busy watching, at one point 4 total.

*note* it is believed that the Eagles nest has failed. The male apparently wasn't good at bringing his mate food. Reportedly the female is not sitting on the nest. I heard this today. What a shame. I don't know if the swarms of people had anything to do with it or not.

Taking place in Belle Vista Arkansas --

FULL Newspaper article POA Board votes to cook goose
"BELLA VISTA - For the second year in a row, the Property Owners Association Board of Directors has applied for permission to kill some of the Canada geese in the city. The only difference this time is that the board is ready to do it."

In Arkansas, Bella Vista Property Owner's Association without trying ANY aversion techniques.... including oiling eggs of Canada Geese want to kill up to 100. This has apparently been a discussion since last year - and thus far NO aversion techniques have been tried - only discussed.

So this year, provided the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows a permit for the killing of the federally protected birds, the Belle Vista City Council would have to also approved a permit to allow the use of firearms in the city limits.

My guess is, in part, the Geese are deemed a nuisance at the Belle Vista Golf Course too. :/

Please if you are so moved, using non- threatening language, write the city council and ask them to NOT approve the permit or you can sign the petition. The POA has NOT tried any aversion techniques, and only discussed oiling eggs THIS YEAR and killing 10 percent of the Geese.

Granted, I am a non resident of Belle Vista, but their plan to shoot and kill Geese, possibly during their molt when they cannot fly is beyond cruel. I find it despicable that NOaversion techniques have been tried, yet the POA wants to teach children and other adults that it's OK to destroy animals. Kill birds for doing what they do, after the humans have developed the area in such a way that it is attractive to the Geese. Attractive to the Geese because no doubt development has also played a part in shrinking habitat. Kill them WITHOUT trying any other means to get the Geese to leave the area and or lessen their numbers.
